Yi Gap-ryong, born Yi Gyeong-ui and a descendant of Prince Hyoryeong, spent his life on Maisan raising towers of stacked stone. He is said to have built a hundred and eight of them, the number taken from the hundred and eight afflictions, of which about eighty remain. His stated purpose was to atone for people’s sins and to save all beings, as part of seeking a Dragon-Flower world drawing on Confucian, Buddhist and Daoist thought.
