Uisang was a Silla monk and the founder of Korean Hwaeom teaching. On the east coast he is said to have followed a blue bird to a sea cave, prayed there for seven days, and seen a red lotus rise from the water with Avalokiteśvara at its centre — and to have built Hongryeonam on that spot in 672. The hermitage takes its name from the red lotus, and its hall is built so the sea can still be seen moving beneath the floor.
