The Tendai abbot who restored Mount Hiei, and whom temples credit with originating omikuji.
Ganzan Daishi is Ryōgen, the tenth-century Tendai abbot, called Ganzan for the third day of the first month on which he died. He is remembered for restoring the halls of Mount Hiei, and Jindai-ji in Chofu, which keeps a hidden image of him, also credits him with making the first omikuji. Devotion to him spread widely in the Tokugawa period, when temples would carry his image to the cities for public showings.
